Natural cedar (WRC) cladding for Sogn Student Village

Sogn Student Village in Oslo sits in a historic area originally built as the athletes’ village for the 1952 Winter Olympics. The new buildings help reduce the housing shortage among students in the capital.

The buildings are spread across five new units: four are pitched-roof houses with an extra storey under the ridge, and one is an eight-storey building with a flat roof. Prefabricated elements are used in the load-bearing structure, while the façades are clad in brick to harmonise with the existing buildings.

The material choices preserve continuity with the original 1950s buildings while making clear that these are modern structures. Emphasis was also placed on environmental measures such as noise monitors, waste sorting and limiting noise during construction.

The area around the buildings is partly protected, which led to complex solutions for preserving trees of biodiversity value. Contaminated soil was also discovered and had to be removed.

Historically, Sogn Student Village is a listed example of Nordic modernism, and the new project carries forward the simple design language of the original development.
